I'm a DJ on Radio Xanadu, a free radio station based near Liverpool.  You can listen at www.radioxanadu.co.uk or on 107MHz VHF in the Merseyside area. My show goes out Sundays 1100-1200 (UK time) and I play mainly new indie and a bit of punk music, from a mixture of obscure artists and more popular artists. I play music because I like it, I am not being told what tracks to play, the station does have a 'rock, indie and punk, with some reggae & ska' format, but I am fine with that, and I can play pretty much what I want. A lot of good music seems to come from obscure artists, and pirate radio can give them a lot of exposure, although BBC Introducing and X-Posure on XFM do this well too.
